Make it stand out

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

And Yet, We Remain’ is a performance piece that reflects upon the trauma and sexual violence experienced by the Chinese community in Indonesia during the Riot of May 1998. Utilising the body as an agent of memory, the performance speaks on the eradication of Chinese-Indonesian culture, identity, and ultimately the lives of the people themselves. ‘And Yet, We Remain’ emphasises the resilience of the Chinese community and their steadfast commitment to honouring the victims of ‘98, with the costume worn throughout the performance representing the fragmented Chinese-Indonesian culture as a direct result of Soeharto’s Presidential Decree in 1967.

During the performance, two performers take on the role of the Others—entities who seek to remove, erase, and appropriate the Chinese community's identity. Henri’s body is covered in Chinese calligraphy, memorialising the lives of those affected during the riot, presenting them as people with personalities, aspirations, and loved ones as opposed to simply viewing them as victims. Meanwhile, Henri’s choice to use 168 incense sticks symbolises the number of documented sexual assault cases across the country during 1998, while the 27 candles signifies the number of years since the mass rape which still remains unresolved until this day.
