spacePADELunavailable is a conceptual video work that responds to the effects of gentrification in major metropolitan areas across Indonesia, particularly in Jakarta, Bandung, and Bali. In this video the artist replaced every space within the research paper with the word PADEL – acknowledging padel courts as a vehicle of gentrification. The use of text editing software is key, illustrating the systemic takeover of spaces and displacing existing communities/discourses. In the background, soundscape from a local futsal compound that becomes a third space for economically disadvantaged children is slowly replaced by the sounds from a padel court. The thwacks from the racket hitting the ball act as harbingers of displacement, parallel to the sounds of constructions that prelude the gentrification of an urban space.
